Neuropsychological Assessment
Dr. MacKillop adheres to the Boston Process Approach for neuropsychological assessment. This approach focuses on individualized assessment batteries that are selected by the neuropsychologist to meet the needs and address the concerns of the individual. Assessments are tailored to the individual and comprehensive reports are written in a way that applies performance on measures in the evaluation to the individual’s strengths and weaknesses in daily life. Individualized feedback after the evaluation is always offered as part of the evaluation. This method of neuropsychological evaluation requires specialized training and is in contrast to a fixed battery approach in which the same measures are given and interpreted similarly for all individuals. Dr. MacKillop is the only neuropsychologist in the greater Athens area providing clinical service with this level of specialization and formal training in neuropsychological assessment.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
Dr. MacKillop is a trained cognitive-behavioral clinical psychologist, and she employs this perspective to treatment. Cognitive techniques include exploring maladaptive thoughts and how they influence our external behavior, relationships, and perspective on life’s events. In addition to cognitive therapy, behavioral techniques are incorporated into therapy. These techniques focus on the behaviors that the client has identified as wanting to change. During the therapeutic process, such behaviors are discussed and mechanisms to change them are identified and practiced. Sometimes this occurs in the therapy office, but other times a more “hands-on” approach is needed to facilitate the applicability to the individual’s life circumstances and needs. Dr. MacKillop emphasizes an individual and goal-directed approach to treatment using both cognitive and behavioral interventions.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
Dr. MacKillop provides a specialized treatment for victims of violent crime and/or who have experienced traumatic events, including those sexual and/or violent in nature. Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is supported by clinical research studies and has been used effectively in many treatment facilities. In this therapy, the individual addresses thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and physiological responses that surface as symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder through an organized and goal-directed treatment approach.
